William Delbert Gann, born on June 6, 1878, in Lufkin, Texas, was a pioneering finance trader renowned for his innovative technical analysis methods. Gann started his trading career in 1902 at the age of 24. Over the years, he developed several technical analysis tools, including the Gann angles and the Master Charts, which comprise the Square of Nine, the Hexagon Chart, and the Circle of 360.
WD Gann is one of the most enigmatic figures in trading history. His use of geometry, astrology, and ancient mathematics to predict market movements and historical events sets him apart. Even decades after he died in 1955, Gann's trading strategies remain widely adopted.
Gann often cited Ecclesiastes 1:9: "That which has been is what will be, that which is done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun." This philosophy underpinned his belief that market events have historical precedents and will inevitably repeat.
Gann’s approach involved studying ancient geometry and astrology to identify repeating patterns across various time cycles. He emphasized the importance of records in predicting future market events, stating, “To succeed, you must continue to study records because the market in the future will be a repetition of the past.”
One of his notable contributions was identifying the 60-year cycle, which he deemed the most significant. He pointed out the correlation between the war period from 1861 to 1869, the financial panic that followed, and the events from 1921 to 1929, including the greatest bull market and subsequent crash. Gann accurately predicted the end of the 1920s bull market in his "Annual Forecast for 1929."
He also highlighted the 90-year cycle, which some believe predicted a financial crisis in 2019, following the crises of 1929 and 1837. Additionally, he noted a 144-month cycle between the economic crises of 2007 and 2019.
